Gallows Hill follows Margot as she inherited her parents business after their deaths. Margot is thrust into a winery business she knows nothing about, while battling her own feelings of abandonment by her parents and the weird stories about her home and land.
I think I had too high of expectations for this book. The premise sounded amazing and spooky, basically everything I’d want from a Darcy Coates story. But I found the story very slow in the beginning and middle and it only picked up once Margo started to get the real story about her family and their land.
I didn’t care for the audiobook narrator. I usually listen on 2.4 but I couldn’t grasp what she was saying and I wasn’t able to follow the story that easily so I had to constantly rewind and slow the audio down.
I very much enjoyed the cast of characters we had and, while I don’t have the same disabilities as Kant I thought the author was very respectful and accurate when writing and showing his disabilities.
Without going into spoilers there was a certain scene near the climax of the story that had me in tears. It was heartfelt, sad, and just very well written.
I liked how we figured things out with Margot and how the answers to the mysteries weren’t obvious. You had to actually pay attention and Margot had to really think to figure things out.
I would have liked to know what happened to the business, Margot and the workers after the events of the book. I would have also liked to see what Margot did to honor the original owners and the ‘convicts’ that were hanged on the land.
We got to see Margot grow from this scared, overwhelmed woman to a brave badass. And while she had her moments of being scared and overwhelmed still, she learned to push through it.
I am still confused about a few things in the book and wished we got more details on them.
Overall while this isn’t one of my absolute favorite I still did enjoy reading this.

This book was super creepy and very hard to put down. I loved the short chapters which made it easier to loose track of how much you’d read, but also made it a great “purse book” because you could knock out a chapter while waiting at the dentist office.
