I am in love with this book! This is the most classic high fantasy I can think of - between the three of them, the siblings fulfill just about all the fantasy cliches you can think of, but they are written in such a new and brilliant way that you don't even notice (although - let's be honest - those cliches is what I'm looking for in high fantasy books). The world and the world's history is gorgeous, and although the amount of characters is quite high I never felt overwhelmed by names (except that one time when Valyn's squad was introduced with like 20 names in one sentence and I just went wait what). I liked this book so much and can't wait to start the second one!!
A really stellar debut novel. Rich worldbuilding and excellent characterizations. What really struck me about this book is the fact that everything is so HARD. Kaden doesn't just master the vaniate overnight, Valyn doesn't just become an expert fighter over the course of a 6 month period. What Staveley does which is so unique is really show the EFFORT and WORK it takes to be come a master at something, how even the technically proficient are always improving their skills, how long it takes for people to travel from place to place. I really found the sections with Kaden interesting. His time with the monks was really illuminating and gave excellent insight into the mind of someone who is trying to attain a pseudo-Buddhist ideal. The real weakness for me was Adare. Her plot just didn't have that much going for it and while she moved the story along, I never really got to know her. He devoted scant number of chapters for her POV and I think that she seemed like an oversight. I think just in general he had issues with his female characters. I could see him trying, I could see that he was putting in the effort to actually include women, that a lot of the named characters were women, that those women actually spoke to each other about things other than a man, that one of them was actually a lesbian. He was almost there... But while I liked the fact that Gwenna and Lin and Annick and Pyrre were all interesting female characters, in some respects they still fit that "strong female character" mold. Though they certainly had more agency and character development than "strong female characters" in similar works of fiction, I still felt as though they were only there to aid the male characters. There just wasn't enough for me. I think a lot of this comes back to the fact that the story is basically the POV of two male characters. I really would have liked more because this book has everything else going for it. It is certainly the best book I have read/ listened to since Blood Song, which I found problematic in the same way.

Mr Staveley narrative is well formed, with the correct flow and feel you would expect of any piece of epic fantasy. It is his variety of leads that is most notable however, and which I will cover in the section below.
His style is very emotive, and the dialogue and scenes are well formed. Some are expected, and keep very much to their genre. However, the strong character development, and conversations of the characters, makes this a treat for any fan of the genre.

This book was fine but felt pretty formulaic. It’s about three siblings, but I think the older sister got all of 20 pages in a ~500 page book, so really it’s about the two brothers. They’re both sent off to separate but remarkably similar institutions that teach kids (mostly boys) how to be better people through strict discipline and a healthy amount of verbal and physical abuse.
Great story. Lots of intrigue. Fight scenes were a little weak. Too much profanity.
You are my last blade. You, and Kaden and Valyn. If you feel, any of you, that you have been hammered hard, it has been that you might better hold and edge

My favorite POVs would be Valyn's, Kaden's and Adare's. I guess because Valyn had more screentime then Kaden and lastly Adare ( I think she had 3 to 5 chapters) but all were interesting even with Adare's few chapters. Valyn struggles with his training to become a Kettral , a special group of assassins. Kaden, the heir to the throne also struggles with his training with the shin monks. He doesn't completely understand the relevance of such training to ruling the empire but strives to anyway. Adare was pronounce Ministry of Finance, in the world of male dominated Annurian politics she knows that they will look at her and only see a princess raised to that stature because of her father and not of her skills. Each have their own obstacles but it all comes together near the end as they try to discover who's behind the plot to end the Malkenian line.
I give this books a 4.9.

This was recommended to me as a Brandon Sanderson read-alike. And YES! Loved it.

Потенциал есть, но я так и не получил увесистых, мясистых сражений, на которые надеялся. Тем не менее, все еще книга смогла меня заинтересовать.
Сюжет разворачивается в трёх линиях с тремя главными героями — отпрысками императора. Средний сын, Каден (имя, словно взятое у Толкина для дворфа), наследник престола, последние восемь лет обучается в отдалённом монастыре. Согласно местным традициям, прежде чем постигать науку управления империей, необходимо воспитать своё духовное «я». Младший сын, Валин (точно слов дворф у Толкина), — кадет элитного воздушного подразделения кеттрал, местного аналога ВДВ. Однако предупреждаю: на заговоры и дворцовые интриги особо не надейтесь — Адер уделено всего около 10% экранного времени. Зато если вам по душе трудные и жестокие тренировки, эта книга для вас. И Каден, и Валин проходят обучение, где грань между жизнью и смертью очень тонка.
Как я уже упоминал, история начинается с убийства императора, но, в отличие от многих подобных произведений, заговорщики не приходят к власти сразу. Мы даже не знаем, было ли это убийство частью заговора или результатом ненависти одного человека. Подозреваемый есть, и его сразу же арестовывают. Возникают несколько подозрений и мелких инцидентов, но больше ничего. В итоге герои, а вместе с ними и читатели, проводят всю книгу в лёгком напряжении — предаст ли кто-то из второстепенных персонажей или нет? Кому можно доверять, а кому нет? Что из происходящего связано с заговором, а что является случайностью? Это напряжение сохраняется до самого конца, что добавляет интриги.
Особое внимание хочется уделить миру, который придумал Стейвли. Он не ощущается чрезмерно фэнтезийным, как у Сандерсона, где помимо сюжетных загадок приходится ломать голову над местными законами природы и магии. Но он и не реалистичен, как у Мартина, где неясно, является ли магия фокусами или настоящей силой. У Стейвли что-то среднее — мир напоминает нашу античность или раннее средневековье, но с присутствием магии, мифических существ и пантеона богов, которые, по легендам, могут вмешиваться в дела людей. В нём интересно разбираться вместе с героями.
Но у книги есть и свои минусы, которые проявляются в мелочах. Чувствуется, что «Клинки императора» — дебютная работа автора. Приведу пару примеров. Стейвли придумал интересную систему магии: она доступна не каждому, не передаётся по наследству и может пробудиться в случайном человеке. Таких людей называют личами, и они черпают свою силу из различных источников — у каждого лича свой. Кто-то получает её из металла, кто-то из крови, кто-то из камня, воздуха или тепла. Главное, чтобы источник был рядом, и тогда лич может творить волшебство. Идея интересная, но автор сделал очень размытые границы того, на что личи способны. Например, один из них может изменять предметы на расстоянии десятков метров — превращать брошенный в него камень в ком грязи, без жестов и слов, просто силой мысли. Балансировать такие способности будет непросто. Ещё один пример — это сюжетные повороты. Их не так много, но они предсказуемы. Если вам кажется, что один персонаж выставлен злодеем для отвода глаз, а настоящий злодей — это другой персонаж, в 90% случаев вы окажетесь правы. Однако это не убивает напряжение, а лишь слегка его снижает.
