I tend to shy from indie publishers, but this book proved how wrong that is. Shame on me!
Adam Binder is comfortable in his life as a magic user, hunting down evil objects in the South, and maybe hooking up with a cute guy if he meets one. Then he gets a call from his brother in Denver asking for his help. He hasn’t talked to his brother in years, but he can sense this is serious, so he leaves his comfort zone and finds himself in way over his head. Along the way he will learn things about old friends, make new friends, and hopefully heal some of his family trauma.
This book is for fans of quirky wizard stories. As a huge fan of the Dresden Files series, I enjoyed this queer twist on the theme. I was impressed by the sentence level writing, as well as the overall plot. It is the first in a series, and I’m excited to read more about Adam.

Fun, gritty, fantasy novel. The pace can be a little all over the place but overall enjoyable and different. I liked the focus on lower income and more diverse characters over your typical fantasy nobles and famous heroes.

I've got a lot of things I'm mulling over, but I loved this book. The characters are so vivid and full of personality. It's very much character-driven, which is my kind of fantasy. The character's past experiences, trauma, and how they're currently dealing with things in the present are the real focus.
