Queer SFF is one of few areas where there aren’t a lot of queer male writers, so today meet “White Trash Warlock” by David Slayton.  It’s a bit misnamed, in my opinion, implying a more lighthearted #book than it is.  It’s an urban fantasy starring a 20 something gay low-powered magic user living in a trailer park in Oklahoma who needs to solve a mystery and save his family.  LOTS of trigger warnings in this one, but the characters and plot are very compelling and it’s got relatively rare class diversity.  Not a cozy, but the MC has a sweetness that you don’t usually see in urban fantasy.

The way the love interest is handled started to feel like copaganda. It sucks, because otherwise I was enjoying the story.

It’s an absolutely wild ride from start to finish, and I can’t be happier I was along for the adventure.

Generally kept me entertained, but I could have done without the copaganda, and sometimes the pacing vacillated between quite fast and rather slow.

HOLY. CLIFFHANGER. BATMAN.

I’ll have an actual review up on my blog and edit this review later to link it but WOAH. This book was all kinda of amazing. As a tarot reader, using the deck to actually see the future was *chef’s kiss.* I mean just all kinds of phenomenal. Again: WOAH. I read as an audiobook and the narration was nearly FLAWLESS. I’ll need a physical copy. I’ll also need to listen to book 2 ASAP.

AMAZING. PHENOMENAL. A TRIUMPH.

Deeply invested and cannot WAIT to read/listen to the next in the series. Astoundingly good start for the first book in a series. World building is cool as fuck, blending traditional and innovative fantasy elements in an urban (and country) setting. Use of alternating POV and flashbacks added to the mystery and suspense brilliantly.

Also, audiobook narration was flawless? Some of the best I've heard.
