Adam is an incredibly lovable protagonist and the way that Slayton describes emotions especially with him is reminiscent of Synesthesia. Slayton unveils his mysteries slowly, allowing plenty of space before unveiling them to the reader. The payoffs are both satisfying and rewarding.

It can be a bit repetitive at times, but I feel for a lot of people that can be a feature not a bug.

As An Oklahoman (tm).... I found the descriptions of Guthrie especially to be both charming and accurate- and even the parts that perhaps I couldn't entirely relate to, Slayton describes with such empathy and love that it's hard not to feel with Adam.

Simultaneously light reading and dark. This was a fun, candy sort of book. It does wrap up the specific threads of the plot but still ends abruptly so will need to continue the series to follow these characters more

I really struggled with the second half of this book... It felt like the characters knew what they were doing, but as a reader it felt like they were just jumping to the next thing without ever telling us why. I also felt the love triangle was a bit too obvious and I just wasn't as emotionally invested as I'd want to be, while balancing the plot.

Sweet and funny while still being mysterious. Way better than I was expecting lol. I love the trailer park Constantine vibes.

I should start by saying that fantasy is NOT my preferred genre, although I’d probably read a lot more of it if more fantasy books were like this one.

Having said that, this book will NOT disappoint regular readers of fantasy. The world building is massive, intense, and consistent (my biggest pet peeve about fantasy novels is when authors write themselves into a corner and the only way out is to break the rules they created for themselves, and Slayton avoids that trap entirely).

But I was much more interested in Adam the human person, his burgeoning romance with a hot cop, his love/hate relationship with his family of origin, and his harrowing past, including the run-down psych ward where he’d spent a good portion of his youth.

When the book took me to ever more fantastical worlds (or as Slayton calls them, “layers”), that human story kept me hooked and along for the ride. To either hardcore fantasy readers who don’t take themselves too seriously or fans of character-driven stories, I’d really recommend WHITE TRASH WARLOCK.

I had high hopes for this. Initially, it seemed like it would be similar to first episodes of True Blood, gritty but grounded magic among people just like you and me. Unfortunately, much like True Blood, as more is explained, more is lost. There were times in this book where I felt like the author did not give us near enough information and  when I wished we’d spent more time with a character or an idea. I like a lot of the magic Adam does, and the idea of a weak hero was very appealing.
However, as these things often go, it turns out only Adam can do the thing that needs to be done in the end. At least it seemed that way. I don’t know, it wasn’t well explained.
Overall, needed more white trash. I will be continuing with the series, and I had a good time. Just a bit let down by the idea.
