Ok I would love to give this 4 stars instead of 3. It was cute & gay but the plot ... Things kind of jumped and didn't feel like they developed. The magic aspect could have been better used. But also I'm ready this right after a different magic/gay series that was absolutely amazing so - high bar.

Adam has the sight, a gift that allows him to see/feel magic, fairies, elves, gnomes, dragons and more that exist outside of our realm. He can also sense people’s feelings from sorrow to fear. This made things difficult for him as a teen, and his own brother institutionalized him.

He now lives in a trailer park with his Aunt. His Aunt has the gift and accepts Adam. He hasn’t spoken to his brother Bobby in years, which is why he is surprised when Bobby asks for help. It seems something is very wrong with Bobby’s wife (understatement of the year). Adam gets in his old Cutlass and heads to Denver.

I loved how this tale unfolded. Slayton filled us in on a need to know basis, giving the story a pleasant flow. Truth be told, Adam doesn’t know a lot about himself, which is why he is tracking the warlock making these magical items. As luck would have it that lead also leads to Denver.

“All the signs points to Denver.”

Trips to the spirit world, fairies, gods, reapers and more await you in this tale with its Supernatural and old-school vibe. The writing is vivid, suspenseful, and balanced against Adam’s dysfunctional family. Secondary characters from the gods to family were unique and developed. I am very interested in some key players in the other realm. Can I just say I loved Vic and hope for more?

There is some romance both past and present, and it was interesting witnessing the present and learning about the past. Adam’s concerns and emotions felt raw and genuine. This added depth and severed as a side dish to the malevolent spirit trying to enter our world. It was all quite clever.

The second point of view is that of Adam’s brother Bobby, who prefers Robert. He worries about his social status and has worked hard to leave the smudge of rural Oklahoma behind. He was complex, and over the course of the story we learn a great deal about Robert and what makes him who he is. I loved seeing strides made to heal the family dynamics, and the author did a stellar job of showing all sides.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Michael David Axtell, who brought these characters and their emotions to life. He assigned unique voices to everyone. His voices for Adam captured our young protagonist from insecurities to benevolence. He enhanced an already brilliant story. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

A very different Romantasy than normal. The LGBTQ aspect was done very well in this story. I love that Adam, the main character, is both completely clueless but also not chastised by more studied characters, elves, for all of his uneducated choices. There is some jabbing humor with American south components. I personally really enjoyed this book and look forward to the others in the series.

A read that is as enjoyable as its title. Well written, and quirky, WTW is engaging and hooks you early on. I look forward to book 2 in the series!

I was really excited to read this, especially coming off of The Last Sun and seeing this as one of the recommended books if I enjoyed that one. Unfortunately, this just didn’t hit for me. I really didn’t like the main character, and couldn’t get into the chapters from his brother’s POV.
I also did feel like it was out of character for Adam, who had past issues with authority mistreating him, to start dating a cop with literally no discussion of his job. For a book that supposedly touches on classism, how are there absolutely zero conversations about how working as a police officer ties into upholding classism? I don’t typically care if characters/LIs are cops in fiction, but if a book purports itself to discuss social issues and then only goes halfway, it takes me out of it a bit.

There were also these random moments throughout the book that I guess were attempts to address racism but just came across very out of place. The LIs brother literally only refers to Adam throughout the entire book as “wonder bread”. I really don’t get why the difference between Vic being Latino and Adam being white needs to be emphasized so much when there is zero conversation about how Adam benefits from his whiteness surrounding pointing this out. There’s also a strange part where Vic was justifying white people opening a Mexican restaurant because the food is good and people enjoy it. If a book is going to have such surface level takes about racism/appropriation, why even bother including it?
The magic system in here also wasn’t super clear to me throughout, but given that it’s just the first book of a trilogy I’ll excuse that as something that will become more clear. Initially, I wasn’t going to continue on with the series after finishing this one but after letting it sit for a month, I think I may.
