Fast-paced, magical realism story. A young man struggles with his own magic and family relationships in this story when his estranged brother calls on him for help. Enjoyed magic world building and the main character's voice.

I enjoyed listening to this. The world is neat, although a bit more explanation would be nice. I appreciated how the author portrayed poverty and living paycheck to paycheck as that is relatable for a lot of people and it was done in a tasteful way. So were Adam's difficulties with being gay in a small community and the struggles he still has because of that upbringing.
I know some people dislike the occasional pov from Robert but I think that gave another perspective into who Adam is and how he became that way as well as showing the struggles of their home life. Were parts of it a bit unnecessary? Probably, but I liked getting more about the family this way. It also gave us some insight into Bobby and why he did committed Adam to the psych ward and why money and appearances are so important to him.
As for the magical world that seems fascinating. There are these towers held by different types of beings, usually immortals but sometimes just long lived ones. I absolutely want to learn more about the elves and other beings as well as their insane power levels. I like that these super powerful beings admit that they can miss things because of that power, it makes their need for Adam so much more real.

Good book, solid start to a series well narrated. Will absolutely continue on with the series soon.

There were a lot of interesting ideas here but the execution was lacking in my opinion. I had a hard time compelling myself to come back to reading. Sorry! I wanted to love it.

Intriguing premise and setting, but the overall mood is too bleak for my taste and I'm not reading two more instalments only to see a love triangle resolved.

Adam Binder is a sensitive, lonely new adult who not only needs to find himself, but also must come to terms with his past, his magic and his sexual orientation.

This is a re-listen of this book for me as I wind up to the new book in the series, and it was just as good the second time around.

This is a refreshing look at paranormal magic through the eyes of of a flawed hero. Adam reconnects with his family when he is called to helped deal with an ancient evil being. He introduces us to a side of the world where reapers, elves, and other magical beings are commonplace, as he tries to save his sister-in-law.

There's a touch of romance with a cute cop, angst with a past love and a whole cast of truely marvellous characters. The world building and magic system are well developed, and the action is fast paced.

What makes this series special is the main character himself. Who else could make a hero out of a young man from a a trailer park who is barely coping with his life.

As I write this I'm listening to book two. and can't wait to start the new one!
