It took me a minute to get into this because I was coming off another “smart-ass urban magic” series. But after a couple of chapters, I settled into the story and I am enjoying this magical world quite a lot! Looking forward to the next books in the series.
I struggled to give a rating to this one. I feel like it should probably be a 4* but I just didn't enjoy it that much.
The book is much more serious than the title implies, and I found the writing to be quite dry. I don't feel like I really know any of the characters asides from the one dimensional character sheets; Robert is serious, humourless doctor. Adam is chaotic younger sibling. Vic is good guy cop. All very stereotypical and shallow.
I liked the plot, however, and thought there was some unique world building and blending of typical fantasy elements with urban fantasy. I will likely read the sequel.

It took me longer to get into the book then I would have liked. Overall it was a interesting book with some good twists and turns, that kept the pace going. Characters were complex and compelling. I liked that there was a smolder that built into romance so it didn't feel rushed. Would recommend to anyone who likes fantasy, with mysterious elements and a slow burn romance.
The idea of this book is fabulous. In execution, this is a weirdly-paced, disjointed, repetitive shortcoming of a fantasy novel. That being said, I will read the next book. This was a first novel and it showed, so I am interested to see how the author improves in the next and maybe he’s learned how to pace the story better and make it more cohesive.
This was fantastic. The realness of the characters, the struggle, the emotion. All of it. Gay and POC representation, self doubt and grief, there were so many aspects of this book that I just really loved and the twists? The darkness? The integration of magic in a modern setting? Ugh I loved it.
I do think there could have been more building when it came to the magic system and history of the world and how it works but overall I truly enjoyed this book and can’t wait to continue the story!

I really loved the setting and character backgrounds in this. MC felt a little too juvenile for my current tastes, and the villain motivation was kinda lame. I think the author could have stretched the mystery out a little more instead of handing it to us in a villain speech. When I tell you I was dying about casa bonita being run by leprechauns!!

I’m a little sad I didn’t love this like I expected but in fairness- I liked it more than I usually like first books in a series. I thought Adam was definitely an interesting ( though sometimes annoying) protagonist, and I love the dynamic between him and his brother. Messy sibling relationships are my favourite to read about.

Love the White Trash Warlock series. It’s so simple but magical. The writing was easy to read and helped me get back into reading. I personally loved the descriptive writing and grew fond of the characters and their development. I recommend this to my LGBTQ+ readers, those who enjoy reading magical, multidimensional fantasy stories. we love a magical gay trash love story with a little bit of daddy (& family) issues thrown into it.
