This is another book that was very popular when I still worked at the bookstore, so I picked it up to learn why. And I closed the final chapter with an incredible read that showed the strong connection brothers can share with one another, and how all these characters struggled through unrest in their country.

I'm not a medical person but I could follow along with the jargon used in this book. Some might find it a little more overwhelming. I will say, though, that people with weaker stomachs should be warned that there are graphic descriptions of surgery. However, the field of surgery is treated with such poetic love that on the whole it's a fantastic part of the story.

Of coures there's the more human part, and the twins played the largest role in that. I could really feel for these boys as they grew together and could sense the connection they shared, as well as how they grew apart over the years. I also enjoyed the bond shared between the twins and their adopted parents, as well as how Marion struggled with the various other characters in his life.

There were some parts that dragged a bit but on the whole the novel was good. For those in the medical field, this is a book that shows how full of life and passion their profession can be. For those who aren't, it's a peek into that world that leaves us feeling not only respect for what they do, but a sense of awe.

Ultimately this book wasn’t for me but it was ok

Verghese is a fantastic writer. I enjoyed reading a fiction book about medicine that the medicine checks out in (he's a doctor, so I'd hope it does). I don't usually like books that span a lifetime instead of just a short period of time, and some of the meetings seemed kind of coincidental (running into someone you knew from Ethiopia in NYC 7 years later etc), it was a great book.

Really gripping novel of a set of twins born in Ethiopia who become surgeons. It’s long and it is not for the faint of heart because it has intense descriptions of surgery. But the character development and storytelling is top notch.
challenging dark emotional slow-paced

This was a good story but I found it rather long. It was hard for me to get into and I never reached a point of not being able to put the book down. I think it finally got good once I was 85% into the book. So therefore, I give this an OK read. Not great, not horrible.
