I gave this book 5 stars not because I enjoyed it, but because it is so masterfully crafted. It was hard for me to read - the detailed medical descriptions and the terrible things humans do to each other. But a fine, suspensful, and passionate story.
Wowzers! I am definitely in the minority with my opinion of this book. The tale was compelling in the end, but it took a lot of time to tell it and the narrator (Marion) was, at best, boring. I guess it just wasn't my kind of book. :(
If I had tried to read this myself, I would have decided that it was too medical, too technical, too long, too foreign and I would have given it up. If I had done that, I would have missed out on a pretty amazing book, though. (Also, the narrator is really good.)

One of the most beautiful books I've ever read! A friend recommended it a few years ago and I am only sorry that it took so long for me to get to it. So many things to love about it. So many strong female characters! Wonderful insight into the world of surgeons and doctors. Lovely story of a young woman learning to choose what is most meaningful in a spouse. Siblings loving, hurting and then forgiving. Live in a pre-revolutionary country in Africa. Live as an immagrant in the U.S. Dedication to serving the poor by most of the main characters. I could go on and on. It is a rich, beautiful story that I was sorry to see end.
