A quick read, but I'm torn about this book. I haven't thought over it enough, but the plot seems a bit fantastical and I'm conflicted about the author's view towards women. Meh, we'll leave it at that.
The story is fascinating and much of the prose beautiful, but I could do without all the medical jargon, especially the gory details on obstetrics.
A apt title, I really enjoyed the play on words. Cutting For Stone is part of the hypocritic oath, and our characters last names are Stone.
If you cannot handle health/surgery talk this is not for you. Verghese pulls a lot from himself - he is an Ethiopian -American doctor. His MCs are Ethiopian twins born of doctors, who become doctors. The background of the Ethiopian revolution. I was a bit nervous about this but it was very readable, the characters are vivid and the pacing is perfect. You learn a bit about the revolution, and a lot about the circumstances around running a rural hospital in Ethiopia. I loved how Verghese wove the story of the birth parents in, you can see how Sister Mary haunts everything around the people and place she died. And I loved how the twins parents (the couple that gets drawn together and then raises the twins) are shaped, and shape the boys. The twins story is tragic, and well worth the read.

A work of fiction with a dose of history to help ground the narrative. Exquisite character development. Sweeping story line.
I just couldn't get into this. I tried and tried but my mind wouldn't focus on it, which is a same since it see like one I "should" love. Maybe I'll try again at a time I'm less busy.
