This book was super enjoyable. It was mysterious and had excellent character development. I read this as the first book of SEVEN. I'm not expecting it to move quickly or be wildly engaging right off the bat. I'm expecting it to lay the foundation.

Also, keep in mind this is a YA book, not an adult fantasy book. It's comparable to GoT but it's not GoT (which is adult fantasy). There is a decent amount of telling, not showing. Again, I expect that in a YA book.

People complain about Celaena being whiney or "not assassin-like."
She acts like a CLASSIC 18-19-year-old girl. She didn't WANT to be an assassin. She STILL doesn't want to be an assassin. She had no choice and then was surprised with her training bill. She explicitly states this - she wanted to be a healer, but then her family was slaughtered and Arobynn found her frozen in a river. She wants legit freedom and being the best assassin was her only way out. Of course, she's going to act like a normal 18-19-year-old and choose to behave like an atypical assassin. She never wanted it in the first place and still doesn't want it.

So, despite the hype, I tempered my expectations and enjoyed the book for what it is. I'm excited to read the rest of the series!

Tropes:
-enemies to lovers
-love triangle
-chosen one
-banned magic
-good vs evil
-reluctant hero
-orphan hero

I quite liked this! There’s an awful lot of loose ends here which is a bit frustrating, but seeing as there’s so many more books in the series it makes sense. I like the protagonist a lot and the supporting characters are equally lovable, but they really got me with the puppy. I do wish there was either more backstory or more something to give us a real look at “the assassin” - we are told over and over again that she’s the best in the world but, like, SHOW me. Hopefully we get more of that in the coming books

There was one scene near the end that was good but the rest was pretty mediocre imho.

I thought this book was good, but not as good as ACOTAR. I keep wanting to read more Sarah J. Maas but none of them live up to the first series I read from her. I liked the storyline and the strong female lead. I also liked the twist at the end that let you into something that the main character didn’t know. I wasn’t sure that she was
going to win at the end.
I think that seeing into different dimensions or worlds is going to become very important later on. In the end, I did like it, just not like some of the other books I’ve read.

The climax was amazing. It was breathtaking, jaw dropping, and entirely….. undeserved. This girl sucks. Not even the fun type of sucks. Celaena (the name alone is awful) is a bitch who does not know how much of an atrocious human being she is. She’s a pick me and this universe sure as hell picks her.
Girl literally has a long gone queen tell her she is the chosen one what type of bullshit-
Also one of the love interests is a puppy murderer. And there wasn’t even smut.
