It was a good story, I enjoyed it. It read a little more like YA, and was saccharine at times. I appreciated the mystery even if it was a prior predictable.

I know that the writing is not the best and Celaena's character traits are inconsistent and there are multiple fantasy tropes here and very little character development buuuuuuut goddamn if it isn't nice to be devouring another SJM page-turner.

SJM is such a good writer and I love TOG. I have previously read ACOTAR, and let’s just say it made reading this more interesting. No it’s not due to connections or anything but the mere fact that I learned to have even deeper trust issues! I have always had trust issues irl, but I tend to see and anticipate outcomes of books. Although I never really loved Tamlin some of the things he did were unexpected, as well as Rhysand and everything he came to be. I feel as though the only person I can truly trust in the first book of an SJM series anymore is the FMC. Having read another series really has the cogs in my mind turning way more, because I’m weary to trust anyone and anything as it could betray me like last time or they could actually be good and I’m wayyyy overthinking it. Anyhow I loved this book and read it within the span of two days, I can’t wait to get my hands on the next one!
(I have decided to read in publication order)

I love that she’s a badass assassin but we don’t see as much of that side of her as I would like. I hope in books to come I get to see more of her past and her backstory of becoming an assassin.

Some texts with a friend: (spoilers are here- pretty much only #6)

1) Dude I started TOG yesterday. I’m almost done but I haven’t been able to trust Dorian from the beginning. Bc she gave me trauma so I can only trust the main female in the 1st book written by her - everyone else will betray her in my mind. No matter how my thoughts develop based on characters I’m so weary of how they will all turn out. I also have seen things about another guy that everyone loves so Ik D won’t end up the love interest.
2) Is chaol going to be another Lucien? I kinda like him and that makes me nervous…
3) Y does she want to break my spirit
I have no idea who or what to trust
What even is trust
4) I think you might be scaring me more
5) I almost feel like Nehemia is actually good so she’ll probably die… (at least sometime throughout the series)
6) Elena just said blood ties can’t be broken. … at the moment I’m just scared she somehow kissed someone from her familial line, or Dorian’s family overthrew hers and didn’t make it known??? I’m so confused bc hai dad would want to make it known and now my mind is all over the place
