I got this recommendation from Ashleigh from AFrolicThroughFiction (who recently commented on one of my instas and I DIED), and she did not let me down! This also worked for the Magicalathon School of Fae prompt to read a book with a beautiful cover.
Let's get one thing straight because I was mistaken going into this: this is a FANTASY, not a science fiction. The premise sounds science fiction-y, but it's a fantasy (with a bit of "science").
50 years before the start of this novel, the Automae took over humanity. The Automae are a race of alchemically-created automatons who, as one would expect, stronger, smarter, and more beautiful than humans. Lady Crier is the daughter of - or rather, the creation of, since Automae are Made and not born - King Hesod, the ruler of one of the two powers in this world. Crier is about to be married off to a leader of an extremist group that wants to further distance the Automae from humanity, and she is unsure about him. Ayla is a human, a servant in the palace, who has been working with the human rebels in an attempt to avenge her family's deaths and kill Lady Crier. But then, Ayla saves Crier's life...
Boy was this guy a surprise! I knew within the first 40 pages that this was going to be a good one. There wasn't anything in this book that I didn't like. Sure, maybe the attraction started a little soon, but they're teenagers, who can blame them? I don't have much to say except that this was an amazingly fun romp. I thought the romance was well done, the world building/historical texts were interesting, and the mystery element was spot-on. I really can't wait to get my hands on Iron Heart; I might even break one of my rules and pick it up this year!

This book was. Amazing. Usually i’m not a big fan of universes where robots have taken over, but this one made it okay. Once I finally got the timeline down and made sense of the politics this book was so GOOD. The only thing I was a LITTLE iffy about was just like how human these so called automan were?? Because like okay she was made, but how? Like the lore behind that was vague. That’s really the only thing I struggled with though. The rest was incredible

This was so good!! I wish there were more books like this

i read both books and wish the slow burn was more centered around Ayla’s hatred towards automae and passion towards revenge instead of their relationship status. the enemies portion was really short and quickly fell away as they both were in love before the ending of the first book. i also feel like the ending was too easy. the war the series was building up to ended with only one death, which was of the antagonist. it was a cool plot and i liked Ayla and Crier’s dynamic. The descriptions of each other from their perspectives were beautiful and definitely the best part of the books. I think the story idea was really interesting and there were great characters but i wish the romance was set up differently.

idk if i believe this rating anymore…i need to reread…..

A rich world that feels accessible, lots and lots of queer love, and the question of humanity? LOVE

But something needs to happen...like some action of some sort. Like, anything
