The cliff hanger killed me a little bit.
Really good story but i honestly couldn’t get into it for very long without getting distracted; but! This fact will not prevent me from getting the second book :)

The problem with this book is that it succumbs to the weight of its own idea. On paper, this seems like a very intriguing and thoughtful sci-fi-ish/fantasy-esque/steampunk adjacent story. However, it never quite gets off the ground.

In the early days of film, directors often told stories in one long take, afraid that if they spliced different scenes together the audience would struggle to know what was happening. Crier’s War is very similar, in that it feels as though the author is holding your hand through a relatively simple plot because they believe it to be more deep and complex than it actually is. Like a children’s film, you will catch yourself guessing the twists and turns of the story before they happen, and you will be right.

Some characters are even named with an equally heavy hand. One of the main protagonists, Crier, has a pivotal moment, early on, where she cries, something automae are not supposed to be capable of doing. Another character, Storm, arrives in a storm. Though not all characters are so distractingly named, the ones that are temporarily pull you out of the story with the heavy-handedness of their name.

Further, for a book that is cast primarily of women, many of which are in places of power, none of them seem to be given the justice of being smart, almost as if they were written with a deliberate disadvantage to make their inevitable revolution that much more sweet and amazing. However, it makes those characters ring false, and by simply giving them some intuition (that most of them would have likely gleaned throughout a difficult life) the story would have been that much more interesting.

In fact, the gender chasm seems to be vast, with small minded women slow to catch up and cutthroat men at the helm. One could argue that that is the story, but it’s not very compelling as it stands.

All-in-all, I wanted it to be so much more than it turned out to be.

this book just kinda set up the plot for the sequel? what if i can’t find the sequel anywhere and don’t ever read it? cool concept though i liked it
