ok cute and all but why did it end like that. i need to read the sequel rn
This book fell flat for me. I never really connected with the characters or the plot. I also never really understood the worldbuilding. Whether Made were some sort of robots but also they weren't. They were designed and perfect and Made but also they age (albeit slower) and die. The Atomae felt like some sort of fantasy race that was just human but Better. Impossible to kill unless you starve them. It lacked depth and nuance. The only real conflict came from the difference in their Kind, not their queerness or identity or personal differences.
Speaking of, I didn't feel anything for Ayla and Crier. There was no chemistry or real attraction. I was told they cared but I didn't feel it.
The plot was alright, but it was quite slow and more of a series of events than one flowing storyline. Hesods motivations for allowing Kinok into his family so he would be less dangerous were nonsensical. Their political ideations were the almost complete opposite of each other, and Hesods support just made Kinok more powerful and legitimized him.

I think this book reminds me of Othello because of the miscommunication as well as the main character, Othello/Crier being too trusting in the good of others.

This took me forever to get through. Not because it was bad, just a slow start and not too captivating until I was about 60% of the way through. It was interested enough… would read the next book in the series but I’m not tripping over myself to read it
Initially, I had a bit of a hard time getting into this. This was very likely also due to me not being very able to concentrate because of university work, but part of it was also because I needed to get used to the writing style and get past the initial set up of the story, which I found a little slow. However, after around 50 pages I managed to get quite intrigued and invested!
Generally, I found that the book itself had an interesting concept and plot. I feared that it would be very science fiction-ish (not my favourite genre), but it had more of a dystopian vibe. There were also a couple of great twists along the way, and lots of elements to theorise about.
As for the characters: at first, I experienced some difficulty connecting with Ayla. I was interested in her story overall, felt for her and appreciated her determination, but something just didn’t click. I was rooting for her, and after finishing I do like her more, but I still feel a bit indifferent towards her. However, right from the start I found Crier very interesting to read about. I appreciated how Crier came to realise her own privilege as an Automa in a world where Automae rule and humans are oppressed, as well as her drive to fight for a better world. Apart from Crier and Ayla, I found the villains very intriguing to read about. There were a couple of side characters that I wish had gotten more depth though, especially Benjy and Rowan.
I also would have appreciated a bit more depth regarding Ayla and Crier’s relationship. Don’t get me wrong, after they were both experiencing feelings for each other, I was very invested in the romance, but I wish I could have seen slightly more depth in how they individually developed feelings and why. Now it felt a bit rushed to me and I couldn’t clearly tell what they saw in the other. I found their dynamic very interesting though, especially from Ayla’s side.
Overall, I very much enjoyed this read and am excited for the sequel. I had some minor issues with the writing style in the beginning (especially related to comments being made between brackets), but I did get used to it in the end.
