Oh man. I had really high hopes for this book because I can’t seem to find a plethora of south Asian romantasy and when I saw this, I knew I had to check it out. It’s a good story, just verrrrrry slow to capture my interest but there were pockets of intrigue throughout. I could tell the author was new at this but the ending was captivating enough for me to read book 2. I recommend the audiobook over the actual book just because I think it flows way better and doesn’t sound as jilted. I am rooting for this author and I’ve purchased her other works—south Asian representation is so appreciated and I’m told her writing style improves with each book. Here’s to the next!

A HUGE thank you to NetGalley for this ARC! It was provided to me, and all thoughts in this review are honest and my own.

I honestly didn’t think I could love a book by Nisha as much as I love the Artefacts of Ouranos series…but I was wrong. Pleasantly wrong, in fact. Found family tropes, magic, romance, darkness, this book had it all.

This book was intriguing from start to finish, and I’m honestly upset that I have to wait so long for the next one. The world was an explosion of color from start to finish, and several times I found myself gaping at the pages, trying to wrap my head around the events happening.

I fell absolutely in love with Zarya and her friends from the beginning, and I CANNOT wait for the day I get to dive back into this world.

Tuli has stolen my heart again with this slow-burn, romantasy, vampire adventure. This author has an amazing talent with world building, never forgetting the small details she writes, including them in all of the encounters she has with that setting. Every time I read Tuli’s work, i’m transported into another well thought out and described world. I can see the world, taste the food, hear the sounds.
One of my favorite examples of this is everytime Zarya would enter Vikram’s family garden, the little Peri would make an appearance, never to be forgotten no matter how small they may seem in the story.

The story begins with Zarya, a human woman and FMC, confined to living with her captors with no explanation as to why she is to remain hidden. Although she has been living with them since as far back as she can remember, Zarya always dreamed of living outside of the secluded place she calls home.

Soon after the story begins, the man who made sure she never left her confines, Row, goes missing along with the wards that were put in place to keep her from escaping. Zarya’s freedom leads her to find her first two friends, Vikram and Yasen, with hopes of finding out why she was kept in the dark, where her true family is, and what is her true destiny.

3.5 ⭐️ Nisha J. Tuli created this beautiful world where I got to learn so much about Indian Mythology and it was fascinating. I feel like we needed this book to understand the world- but I was hoping for more depth of characters. I think we’ll get it as the series continues!

Fully immersive fantasy here, from the feasting to the foolin' around, with a fast-paced narrative that only let up for a dance break or occasional make out session. The twists kept coming! So much fun, and can't wait for the next one!

What a fun and original setting! I absolutely loved this cool take on rakshasa lore. I’ve only been exposed to rakshasas through D&D and they are much, MUCH different

I was intrigued by this world surrounded by demons and the backstory of Zarya. One of the reasons for the lower rating is due to the many cultural terms and demon names referenced in the book that I couldn't decipher, without a guide to reference, I had no idea what any of it meant, so I had a hard time understanding the story and it was slow at some parts. Even with my lack of understanding I was still interested enough to keep going. Overall, the plot is interesting even if a bit confusing, I am eager to learn more about this dream man, and how things will unfold for Zarya. I also love the friendship she found with Yasen.

Very slow paced at the beginning but speeds up about halfway through and gets even better from then.
