Ehhh. I don’t know. The non-European magic was cool but the main character seemed whiny to me and I didn’t get any real chemistry between any of the characters. Besides that, the main conflict is based on a lack of communication which I just couldn’t understand any real reasoning for. It really wasn’t for me and probably wouldn’t just be a 2 ⭐️ if it weren’t for the non-Euro-centric magic.

I didn't want to keep reading. I actively avoided picking it up. It was slow and confusing and I was not invested in any of the characters or the plot.

I absolutely love Nisha J. Tuli's writing style and the way she builds a world and character. The main character, Zarya, has the classic strong female warrior traits we love but Tuli also gives Zarya a hint of desperation in regards to desiring a connection with others. The push and pull between all of the character dynamics is fascinating and thrilling to read. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about different cultures through the rich tapestry of eastern cultural influences that Tuli weaves into her fantasy world. Definitely looking forward to the sequel!!!
