Fascinating, dark, beautifully written. I felt like I had no idea what was happening for at least half the book and I liked it. Dark and twisty and lightly lesbian.

This was my favorite book of 2021. Beautifully written, with a gripping plot that had me thinking the entirety of the day wondering what would become of the characters. I will be buying and reading all of Sarah Waters’s other works. My only regret was not reading this sooner.

If you like gothic literature, lesbian lit, an insanely well executed plot twist, or just a really great read, pick this up immediately.

This was very entertaining lol!!  I read on reddit that someone said there were too many plot twists and it was dumb, but personally... I loved the plot twists because they were so trite idk!!  I also found the characters funny ngl.

I think Maud and Sue are truly the only victims lmaoooo and I am counting Gentleman! Maud's abuse... that is so despicable and the fact she didn't even have to be there!!!  Omg I feel for her and her anger.  She's crazy as fuck and I think people forget.  She was soooo mean and violent to Agnes... fucked up!  She had Gentleman assault Agnes to get rid of her like girl that's not cool.  Like the way I literally read that and was like ohhhh so Sue is like not even that bad omg.  Sue was going to rob her of $3k but like she was actually raised in poverty omg can you blame her for being a little bad???

To me, the real villain is Mrs. Sucksby she was supposed to protect Sue and instead she tricked her and sent her to die in a madhouse!  Like I know that Sue would have given her the money if she had known about the Switch.  Mrs. Sucksby was a greedy bitch!  Was she fucking Gentleman?? Like I didn't understand their dynamic at all.  I think maybe he was just raised by her similar to Sue, but that doesn't really make sense because Sue was supposedly special yk?  The way Sue was made a fool by all of the lies at the end!  She visited her in prison and cried for her and defended her... it's so hard to see!

I feel for Charles lol I would also be a crybaby if I lived any part of this lol!  I hate John Vroon and justice for Dainty!!

Hello lovely readers! It’s March already, and I am spooked. Not only because time flies so quickly (seems like yesterday I was having my ‘Oh no, it’s nearly 2020 now’ breakdown), but also because of this week’s read. Fingersmith is not for the faint-hearted. It’s twists and turns will leave you hooked, disgusted and delighted – I recommend to any lover of Victorian-era mystery!

Our novel centers around two characters – Sue Trinder and Maud Lilly. One is born into poverty, the other is born into wealth and the novel follows their journey into finding each other and eventually, falling for each other. The journey is not a simple one however – both women have been linked from birth by circumstances out of their control that will come to light in the novel’s twist.

An accurate image of me, reading this book until the early hours of the morning.
As always, Sarah Waters excels at what she does. I don’t think I’ve ever read a novel that has such a compelling and visceral account of Victorian London. There’s one particular passage that I can’t seem to forget, in which Maud finds herself penniless, wandering through London with no shoes. Waters describes this in such great detail – the horror, the pain and embarrassment Maud found herself in, that I was transported to London with her. I also adore Waters style of conversation – she manages to use local London slang as well as Maud’s upper-class style without it grating on your eyes (see: Hagrid). Furthermore, when the novel’s twist is revealed, it is genuinely unexpected. Waters is fantastic at unpredictability.

So what is this twist you ask? Without revealing too much, I’ll simply say this: the novel you believe that you’re reading is not the novel that lays before you. I cannot express this enough: Read this novel.

Lagged in places. Enjoyed the doubling and uncanny elements. Not as good as Affinity, despite it's similarities.
