I just can't get into historical fiction... Maybe I'll try again someday and actually try to finish it before I have to return it to the library

I loved the beginning. I loved Maud's supposed innocence, her naivety, and even Sue's. I loved the delicate, quiet love that blossomed between them, and the utter silence of Briar. It was soft and beautiful and wonderful. And the twist- oh, I should have seen it coming. It was obvious from the beginning once I looked back. After all, Gentleman was built up as a devious character, and there was no way Sue and Maud would have been able to get away with their quiet relationship. I wanted that tension to stay there, to be so high I could almost taste it. Would Maud and Sue be reunited, would Maud break Sue out, would they be able to live in that quivering tight place again. Oh! Oh!

But the middle fell flat. Waters had built up this fragile, beautiful thing and it just wasn't able to be carried for Maud's portion of the story. Nothing could quite match the hype at the start of the novel. The story started to drag and I started getting bored in some parts. I wanted the girls to be reunited. I didn't want to read about life at Lant Street, or the monotony. Once the narration returned back to Sue, it started to pick up again. However, after Gentleman's death and Mrs Sucksby's hanging, the story started to drop again.

The delicate nature of the beginning couldn't be maintained, I suppose. Although I really liked Maud, I found she wasn't suitable a narrator. Sue was much more lively, and carried the story better. I still enjoyed the whole book, but it wasn't as appealing as [b:Tipping the Velvet|56373|Tipping the Velvet|Sarah Waters|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1233949378s/56373.jpg|1013794].
