Sarah Waters never disappoints! I was so swept up in the story that I couldn’t think of anything else until I’d finished it. I’d already seen The Handmaiden, loved it, and finally picked up this book after being warned it’s very different from the movie.
My heart broke at the extra twist in the last third or so.
Both book and movie are excellent!

I had to put the book down a few times while reading the last few chapters to cry about how much I wanted my mother to be with me, and how much I wished she'd get back from work. I cried about how I'd have to leave her for university in a few years, and suddenly the thought of staying home for uni, which I always swore against doing, didn't seem that bad. I cried about how I'd probably have to experience her death in my lifetime, and prayed for the hundredth time that I die before her. I cried about how much abuse she had had to face carrying me in her womb all while being a full time student.

A few other books have made me feel this way. I love how mother-daughter topics in books make me crumble. They make me want to go to my mother and cry and cry and cry and love her as much as I can to somehow make up for all the time I take her for granted.

Anyway, regarding the book: Some of the best romance I've read in a while(don't even want to call it romance, doesn't do it justice. It's so much more). I loved how both the women stayed imperfect to the very end.

First twist shook the earth for me. The next few were good too but nowhere near the first.

Sarah Waters is the best writer I've read from yet.

Great book, I am now in fucking shambles, 10/10

Enjoyable historical fiction, but way too long. We basically get the exact same story from two perspectives.. with the twist being that the guy who is roping both ladies into a swindling plot, turns out to be double crossing them. Yep, saw that coming from miles away, even reading it from the first perspective.

I only finished it because Sarah Waters can write very atmospherically.

DNF @76%. I just do not care. I thought this was supposed to be a historical romance and that’s the way I’ve always heard people talking about it, but it’s really just a historical slog. There’s some slightly interesting parts at the beginning but at this point, I can barely tell who anyone is and I don’t even care to see how it finishes.

This is long and boring and there feels like virtually no plot. The little bit of plot I did comprehend has since left the building and again I just …there’s no reason for this to be this long and seeing as how it’s pretty much aromantic at this point, I have to put myself first.

It’s a character driven story but the characters are dull. I know it’s bad for me when I tried to read it and listen and neither format worked.

Sorry to the book club. I tried.
