I wanted to like this book so much more than I ended up liking it. The first third of it seemed to drag on. I wanted the relationships to be so much more exciting and believable than they were. I wanted to cheer for our characters and root for them to be together but I didn't. It felt like it was trying to straddle a character driven novel and a plot driven novel and in doing so, did neither particularly well.

It became a book that I probably could have DNF'd if my stubbornness and my hopes that it would get better did not hold out to the end.

The twists and turns in this story! It was like reading a Dickensian soap opera - there’s a band of thieves, a mad house, a sizeable inheritance up for grabs, and no one is who they appear to be. Such a fun read!

I am so upset that this book can't just continue forever. As is Sarah Waters's way, she drew me in slowly and steadily with her exquisite prose and incredible knack for writing in an "old" style without becoming a parody. And suddenly before I knew it, I was absolutely hooked and immersed in the world of Briar and in the characters of Susan and Maud. The plot twists, the ambiance, the character complexity, the sensuality, everything was perfection. I never wanted it to end.
