Read for my book club

- I like that The characters are complex
- I kept thinking every older female character was sues secret mum ( mrs sucksby & miss Wilson at the asylum)
- Some things confused me at first ( like what the uncle did, porn or poison)
- The plot twists shocked me( sue being sent to the asylum, the baby swap , maud being mrs sucksbys)
- I liked how it showed maud and sue being falling in love while not fully trusting eachother
- I really felt the characters discomfort ( Maud at mrs s & sue at the asylum) which is good writing
- I thought it would just be a sweet love story so it was a very different book than I thought

My first ever five-star rating on Goodreads—though as I have said previously, I do not feel comfortable with the Goodreads five-star rating description of 'it was amazing', which I consider overly exuberant. There must, surely, be a more appropriate word choice here than 'amazing'? What word, or description, would you use? I can, however, readily agree with the words of Douglas Kennedy from the Mail on Sunday who said of Fingersmith,
"Intensely atmospheric, impeccably paced, and cunningly structured, this is that rarity in contemporary fiction: a deeply serious novel that is also a thumping great read."
As I am in total accord with Kennedy, what more need I add? Except to say that the Audible unabridged audiobook version of this (Little, Brown Audio) narrated by Juanita McMahon is well worth your investment of money and time. 23 hrs and 35 mins of expertly handled, absorbing story telling by McMahon who, it would appear, also narrates many of Water's other novels.

I'm off to immerse myself in Tipping the Velvet by Waters next, and can barely wait... for the joy of both the quality of writing and the unabridged audio narration.
