Night Watcher by Daphne Woolsoncroft - Rating: 5/5⭐️
When Nola Strate was 8 years old, her life changed as her babysitter was slaughtered as she was supposed to be asleep upstairs. 20 years later, Nola has taken over for her dad as host of Night Watch, a late night radio show discussing with listeners stories of hauntings and cryptic sightings. As her dad Chick gets ready to announce his new book detailing that night, Nola starts feeling like someone is watching her, receives a call detailing the same man that attacked her home two decades prior, and starts reliving her own haunting all over again as The Hiding Man is back. Detective Jack De Lacey.
LIKES:
👍🏾 That’s a way to start a thriller with a prologue type beginning.
👍🏾 Dude, I thought 11 pm would be a good time to start this book…wrong. I was all good and dandy and the. The first chilling scene with the boot prints came into the picture 20 pages in and I immediately put it down before I got too scared. And that wasn’t the last heart attack inducing moment I had. There were actually plenty of time that my heart rate was elevated because I was scared shitless.
👍🏾 Getting the double POVs added different layers to the story. Getting a survivors and detectives view points going through the initial murders and working their way through the new ones was cool. I could really sympathize with Jack having this overwhelming guilt over not solving a murder that already took over a lot of his life with negative repercussions and then having the responsibility to save the day for real this time. It felt like a tremendous pressure. I could also sympathize with Nola, having to relive the whole ordeal. It was like she was in a sequel to her own horror movie where she should’ve lived happily ever after.
👍🏾 The pacing held out all the way through. I feel like we got a really well-rounded story between Nola, Jack, and flipping through the past.
👍🏾 Played out a lot like the thrillers that I grew up watching. It helped me DEVOUR the book following that textbook thriller/horror movie storyline.
DISLIKES:
👎🏾 The bad guy became a good suspect and made sense in the long run, but I kind of wish that it was one of the more integral characters like I was suspecting the whole time so that the reveal was bigger for shock factor and better to investigate along with the story. But that’s me being a sour puss that this is one of the only books I couldn’t figure out.
Overall, this was our July book club pick and your girl has apparently been in a thriller mood. Which is perfect because this book scratched that itch just right. The pacing between storylines, timelines, and murders was perfect, the characters were likable, and the scary scenes brought me chills. Very good read and one of my favorite thrillers to date(which you know I’m picky about my thrillers so that’s saying something).
Giving this 5 stars bc it was creepy and good! Would, will (and already have) recommend. Well written and easily digestible, it was fun to play detective.

I was GRIPPED by this book and couldn’t stop listening, but the ending didn’t have the payoff I was hoping for.
I do not recommend reading if you’re from Portland, Oregon as the setting was poorly researched and seemingly chosen just on vibe. This made the book unreadable to me especially when the inconsistencies are major plot points. I also guessed the killer within the first 10 pages.
