this book was so cool.
found family is probably my favourite trope, and the execution in this one was *chefs kiss*
I loved all the characters so it is a little bit hard to choose favourites but I think my favourite is Nina 🤭 she's just so cool.
I also adore the enemies to lovers part of Nina and Mathias... absolute perfection. (he was added to my book boyfriends ofc)
all the characters are freaking amazing and they are my babies fr.
the first like 50 pages are a little bit slower than the rest of the book and it's definitely a bit confusing (although it helps if you read shadow and bone before this). but it definitely picks up after that. and it's written in third person even with a bunch of different povs but I did get used to it. but I do think it would be better in first person with this amount of povs (I hope this makes sense). but again, I got used to it and the plot became too good for me to even care about it.
I'm just absolutely obsessed with this and I can't wait to read the sequel.

THE CHARACTERS. I JUST LOVED THEM SO MUCH. They’re so well developed and have the best personalities. I genuinely wish they were real.

So many twists and turns, so many clever plot points, endless times when you think it’s all going to come crashing down and then suddenly the plan has been there all along and it all clicks in to place.
Can’t wait to read the second book.

I am in love with every main character, especially Inej and well every crow and I love the little romance going on. If you know you know, I never like Matthias, though, I never did. Nina can do so much better!!
I love the ice court heist!! It was so interesting and funny, but I have no idea how to imagine that and that’s why started watching the show Shadow and bone. But I’m honestly so disappointed because first of all I didn’t like the shadow and bone triology, and the show is mainly about that, and I only love the the crows. Also, the show was not like any of the books and that make me really mad. I just wanna watch the heist not some other random mission. Anyways I need to read a different genre now, but I’ll come back for Crooked kingdom!

Something that impressed me was how deftly it broached some pretty mature themes without getting depressing. Also the complexity of the characters, which is Bardugo's biggest improvement from her previous titles imo.

Moderate: Medical content, Blood, Body shaming, Murder, Toxic friendship, and Xenophobia
Minor: Acephobia/Arophobia, Alcohol, Suicidal thoughts, Gore, Sexual violence, and Child abuse

I only have two critiques: I wish all the characters were just a few years older. To me, especially the romances would be more compelling but the characters would also be more developed. Also, I think that the beginning of the book was a bit muddled and seemed to have too much all at once for introducing a new setting/social scene. Even though I read Shadow and Bone, I was still confused and disoriented about introducing how everything works in Ketterdam, especially since the characters are already established there instead of learning along with the reader.

You'll be on the edge of your seat, wanting more, and desperate to see how it all pans out for our beloved characters by the end of it.
Graphic: Abandonment, Grief, Injury/Injury detail, Panic attacks/disorders, Sexual assault, Sexual violence, Classism, Drug abuse, Child abuse, Blood, Confinement, Death, Gun violence, Pedophilia, Physical abuse, Slavery, Torture, Kidnapping, Ableism, and Trafficking

Inej, one of the main characters, has a backstory HEAVILY rooted in discussion of pedophilia, child trafficking, sex trafficking, slavery, sexual slavery, rape, sexual abuse, kidnapping, and so much more. While handled with beautiful tact and insight, the depictions of flashbacks and Inej's feelings of these things can comfort survivors of similar things as much as it destroys us. Go with caution. As well, religious bigotry, ableism, trauma, emotional neglect, horrid things happening to children, war, racial fetishization, and so much more is dealt with in tactful ways, but ever presently used as reminders that the world is as imperfect and dark as it is beautiful.
