Something with this book just didn't gel with me. I didn't hate any of the characters, but I didn't really care or feel for any of them. isadore was interesting, because he wasn't the all bad or all bad with a backstory typical of middlegrade, which I love. Isadore was a person who was just lonely and felt cheated but really just lonely. His appeal wore off as he became more and more incompetent and inept. No surprises in this book, even about the grandmother. The parents gullibleness in this was unreal. I can suspend disbelief, but this was too much. It was a cute quick fluffy read that was fine, but maybe too fine.

I just finished this one on audio. I really liked it, although I questioned one of the twists at first. I think kids will enjoy it too.

This was a fun, fantastical story that I would have loved to read as a child. To believe that some people have magic and don’t know about it or that there is this magical underground would have been perfect. As an adult reading middle grade I was charmed and entertained as well.

I listened to this book in its Audiobook format - what a wonderful find. I had heard nothing about the book or Saunders prior, so I was completely surprised by the direction the story went in. Unlike many books, you have no idea where the story is going because it is truly an original plot with quirky and delightful characters. I have since recommended this to others, and I'll definitely be reading/listening to Lily, Oz, and Kayden's adventures again. Be warned though, there are older themes such as violence (murder, though nothing gory) and alcoholism, so those with younger readers might want to skim through it first.

Chocolate, magic, spies, hilarious talking cats and rats. What's not to like?

I read this thinking it would be a fun kids book for Katie and I to read together. Luckily I decided to read it first, before I read it with her. It was a charming and cute book, but had some awfully dark topics (murder, kidnapping, witches).
