3 stars - I liked it

Knightmaster Nea Laurier and Knighthunter Kaden Galath have been sent to find and rescue the Knightqueen Carys and her Knightguard Stein from the Gek’Dragar. Nea is determined to complete this mission even if it means working with Knighthunter Galath who she has hated since school, but she quickly realizes that Kaden never hated her.

Like all the Hackett’s books, this was a wonderful blend of action and romance. Nea and Kaden start this mission as begrudging partners but the more Nea learns about Kaden the more she finds herself falling for him. Nea was a strong, determined, and extremely capable Kightmaster and I loved her from the beginning. While her father may have pushed for her to be excellent at everything we see that she truly does enjoy her job.

“You’re my queen, Nea. It’s always been you.”

Kaden is an extremely protective and dangerous Knighthunter. He has pushed Nea away for year because of his abilities but this mission means he can no longer ignore his feelings. I loved watching Kaden open up to Nea and admit his feelings. He has been in love with her since he was a teenager and now that he has a chance with her he goes all in. While Nea may be straightlaced and rule follower, Kaden is the complete opposite which made them really good partners during this mission. Also I really loved seeing Nea let loose a little and learn to bend the rules a little.

This book takes us to many different locations in the Gek’Dragar space. Like all of Hackett’s sc-ifi books, she does an amazing job at creating unique and fascinating worlds.  The Gek’Dragar are a very interesting enemy and I liked that we are seeing more of why they are considered evil and how they destroy worlds. I am very curious to see how they are dealt with in future books.

Overall, this was a great sequel to Knightmaster and I can’t wait to read the next book, which hopefully will be Knightqueen Carys book.

Trigger Warnings: brief mention of the death of a parent and sibling; toxic parent; references to kidnapping, imprisonment, and torture
