Picked up the book even tho I was a little skeptical with the cover. There were things I liked about it - the politics of the world is interesting, there were side characters I liked, and the world building pulled me in. But there wasn’t enough focus on that to make up for the fact that I could not get into the two main characters or buy their chemistry. By the end of the book i felt a bit more invested and enjoyed Lara’s character more - I enjoyed her character enough that i might read the second book but *spoilers* that’s mostly because the set up seems to have things a lot more focused on the politics of the world since it seems the main characters are going to be separated. And I’m feeling like I likely won’t pick up the second book mostly as if that’s the goal then I think I might find it hard to root for. Overall there’s definitely some sparks of really good stuff here but the leads couldn’t carry the story for me.

Falling in love after almost betraying not just him but an entire kingdom? DOUBLE MUAH
There was so much personal growth from the first and last chapters, though I never doubted her from making the right choices. Most of the time.
She was misled and educated to kill the king, her husband, or at least try to look for weak points so her father could take over the kingdom. Her father lied and covered up his dirty dealings and tried to convince her that the reason her kingdom was suffering was because the Bridge Kingdom was keeping trades from taking needed supplies into her kingdom.
If you don't read this book in 2024, I'm going for you.
