Things I liked
°this book is like a trashy horror movie and they just have something about them, don't they?
°it was incredible engaging: I flew through this and directly picked up the second one because I wanted (to know) more
°the exorcism aspect. I love horror centered around that topic. Is that weird? Probably
Things I disliked
°there's n0 real substance to it, which isn't necessarily bad but my emotional connection to a book is what I base my ratings on
°the unnecessarily gory discriptions. Everyday and minor injuries were discripted with such detail that is just wasn't nice. For example: the opening scene is the main character picking her fingertips and an overly long discription of that drawing blood and ripping the skin away followed - This book is just gore and gross, which isn't somethimg I *enjoy* reading about.
Concluding thoughts
I would recommend this if you're looking for a trashy, gory horror movie in novel form. Before deciding to read this you should know if you're okay with reading about violence and death that happens to both humans and animals.

Fast paced and unhinged. At no point in time could I have predicted what was going to happen. Loved the ending!

I found this book to be extremely disappointing, but I'm wondering if I just expected too much out of it. The concept was interesting, and I appreciated that it was fairly twisted and gory. However, the characters completely ruined it for me. There was no character development, and I found Sofia and her 'friends' incredibly one dimensional with no redeeming qualities to them. I need reasons to care about the characters, and with these five girls, there was none. They mainly felt like placeholders to me. I'm kind of surprised I finished this book, to be honest.
Someone else may have said this, so my apologies if they did, but I feel like the best way I can describe this book is The movie Mean Girls was in a relationship with the movie The Craft and had an affair with Pretty Little Liars. The result was this book. Given that I like The Craft and Pretty liars, and don't completely hate Mean Girls, I want this description to be a compliment, but it's not. I'm going to go ahead and assume that I'm not going to read the second book.

*3.5* That ending though! I liked this book a lot and it was definitely gory and creepy and everything you'd want in a horror novel. I was watching booktubers and a lot of them said they thought it should be a stand alone but I'm super excited to see what happens in the next book.. I hope I don't have to wait too long :(

2,5 Il classico momento in cui la tua amica di infanzia inizia a fare i piercing e si chiava il tuo ex e tu la esorcizzi.
Se la premessa può anche essere accettata (White Rich girl è una fanatica religiosa e decide di esorcizzare la sua amica "peccatrice"), la realizzazione è tutta un'altra cosa. Perché, pur volendo avere l'ambiguità nella prima parte del libro (i piercing ti rendono davvero Satana?) , non mi puoi distruggere la logica: per quanto una ragazzina possa essere tosta e ribelle, mi spieghi come faccia ad essere così badass anche quando l'hanno rapita e legata in un seminterrato?
Perché non mente fin da subito, dicendo a Riley ciò che lei vuole sentire? Non si trova in un luogo neutro, non ha potere, loro hanno un coltello e sono quattro contro uno. Il fatto che Brooklyn non si arrenda immediatamente dopo che Riley sta continuando ad affettarla con un coltello e le ha pure tagliato il mignolo è ridicolo: oquesta vuole morire o è Satana.
E infatti. Twist telefonatissimo, anche se apprezzo come Brooklyn si interessi molto dell'effetto scenico («I take a step closer, narrowing my eyes at them. Someone’s drawn bloody smiley faces over the photographs. It looks like a child’s finger-painting. In the corner of one, I see the same pentagram symbol that had been drawn on my driveway under Grace’s mutilated remains. Brooklyn’s been here.» quando poi Riley non era in casa e Brooklyn la uccide nella casa al lago. Ha fatto tutto questo per Sofia? Non aveva niente da fare? La famiglia di Riley è sparita nel fumo??).
Sofia narratore orribile, che prima dice una cosa e poi la frase dopo si contraddice («I can’t do this. I can’t stand by and watch someone die, even if it means saving myself.» e «“I can cooperate. I can help.”» alla pagina successiva. Bah), molto saffica sia per Riley che Brooklyn (si toccano in una maniera eccessiva), ma questo è cestinato, perché ovviamente noi ci dobbiamo concentrare sul gore e sulla violenza, mica sui personaggi.
I personaggi, infatti, non sono niente di che: la grande romance del libro, tra Sofia e Charlie, nasce e muore in quattro loro incontri; Brooklyn è il classico personaggio cattivo (fa i piercing (usando aghi che tocca e ritocca con le sue mani sporche)), Riley è la fanatica religiosa, Alexis è la seconda fanatica religiosa, Grace prima sembra allearsi con Sofia e alla fine la tradisce perché serviva al plot. Per non dimenticare la madre che fa parte dell'esercito ma quando una ragazzina sedicenne le entra in casa nel mezzo della notte lei manco se ne accorge. Certo.
Mega twist finale che lascia più domande che altro: se Sofia è davvero Satana pure lei, perché la nonna se lo ricorda solo a fine libro? Anche perché Sofia dovrebbe aiutarla ogni giorno, a mangiare e tutto, e la cosa che l'ha resa Satana l'ha fatta prima di trasferirsi. E perché Brooklyn tiene tutti i poteri fighi (telepatia, rigenerazione mega veloce, visioni da incubo e quanto pare pure teletrasporto, perché non ho ancora capito come abbia fatto ad uscire dal bagno) e Sofia no? Deve uccidere più persone per diventare Satana Super Sayan?
In tutto il libro il personaggio migliore è Brooklyn, scusa Danielle, non tiferò per una fanatica religiosa che ha torturato una persona per tutto il libro. Proprio per questo Brooklyn ha tutto il diritto di uccidere Grace e Riley e le altre cose cattive che ha fatto sono state chiavare uno, forse spellare un gatto, forse uccidere un uomo (per cui non si sa neanche il movente o come sia successo), io la supporto.
Lo consiglierei? No. I personaggi sono scritti male, la trama va da tutte le parti, e l'unica cosa più o meno salvabile è il gore, ma c'è di meglio.

While I think maybe certain teen horror fans might enjoy this, it wasn't really the book for me. The plot stumbles along quickly, often tripping over it's predictable dialogue and shock-value horror. There's no character development and everyone's personality seems to be pulled from TVTropes.com. In a way, it was sort of entertaining, but in the way a C-list campy horror film is mind numbingly entertaining. Like, grab some popcorn and binge this for a couple hours of YA scares but don't expect much more.
To be perfectly honest, in the broad scheme of things this could be a 3-star book, but GR deems the 2-star to be "it was ok" and that's really all this book was for me personally.
