This book was kind of slow reading for me, and for the first third I really didn't know where it was headed. But I finally got the big picture and started to get in to the stories of the characters. By the end, I was appreciative of the stories and the characters, who began to feel real to me, and I appreciated the opportunity to learn about the country of Bulgaria and its history in the 20th century.

3.5 stars, really. I loved so many things about this book-- the characters, the atmosphere-- but the pacing was a bit off, IMO. It often seemed circular and repetitive, as though the plot wasn't really headed anywhere. There's an excellent story, though, if you can navigate the maze to find it.
Thanks to Goodreads Giveaways and Netgalley for an ARC of this book.
This, unfortunately, was a book that I kept picking up and putting down. It wasn't a bad book but the pacing felt rather stranger and I kept waiting for something to happen to propel the plot forward more. I never read The Historian but I remembered liking The Swan Thieves. This one just didn't work for me. I didn't appreciate the changing from 1st to 3rd person with the MC's past and present story line. It had great potential but didn't work for me.

Good story. The history woven into the story, along with some of the Bulgarian features were very interesting. For the audiobook it seemed that some characters changed actors part way... a little confusing. Ending had some marksmanship fallacies that rolled my eyes.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing a free ebook copy of The Shadow Land By: Elizabeth Kostova in exchange for an honest review.
I was very excited to read The Shadow Land since I loved The Historian by this author so much. The Historian is one of my favorite novels, but this one did not do it for me. The writing in this one killed me from about page two. I feel like unimportant things are described in too much detail. The writing droned on and on. I felt like I had been reading forever and I wasn't very far in. To be honest, I only made it to 5% and I had to quit. Wow.

Overall The Shadow Land is a pretty disappointing read for me and I'm sad I had to DNF so early on. This book to me did not feel like the same writing that I loved in The Historian. Not everyone can be Tolkien and not every book needs that level of description. I couldn't get into this one at all so I figure why keep going if I already really dislike it?

I can't personally recommend this one, but if the blurb sounds good and you can handle long winded descriptions then maybe you'll like this one more than I did.
