.

.
.
Poslední kapitoly mě naprosto rozdrtily. Autorka bravurně popsala tragické situace plné žalu a já pocítila jen zlomek toho, co musí lidi zažívat v takových chvílích.

I must say that this book wasn’t as good as her last one, but it wasn’t exactly horrible. I was kind of expecting one last pay off right at the end, but unfortunately, there wasn’t.
Dive down deep into marriage...
Shortest summary ever: Livia has waited 20 years for her 40th birthday party - sort of the wedding she never had since she married so young. But on the cusp of the party, she’s keeping a secret. Her husband is keeping a secret. Secrets are going to collide...
Thoughts: This book has stayed with me since I finished it - in fact I’d label it more psychological than mystery because it delves into a marriage and how secrets are handled - massive secrets, the whys, whats, and hows, and begs the reader to ask “what would I do?” And I think that’s the most interesting part, because the truth is - we don’t know. No spoilers here - but it’s one of those books you’ll either scream “no one would do that!” Or you’ll pause and think “what would I do?”

I wasn't sure what the point of this Adam and Livia's story was but as I read I figured out the "dilemma" was different for each of them. Should they tell their spouse something that would impact their lives in an irreversible way? Should they prolong the inevitable? The dilemma they each face has the potential to tear their family apart so the reader either sympathizes with them or berates them for being cowardly and indecisive!
I had mixed feelings about each character but I felt that there was a satisfying ending even though there wasn't the typical "twist" that this author is known for.
I look forward to reading more books by this author.

I’ve been seeing mixed reviews for this one. Some people love and others just didn’t like it.
And after reading this one I can see why there are so many mixed reviews. But honestly, I’m in the love it category!
I enjoyed this one SO MUCH. It was my first book by this author so maybe that’s why?
HOWEVER. This isn’t a thriller. Like not at all. I’d say it’s more of a family drama.
Sometimes I really need to read more info about a book besides knowing the genre and the author

Meh. This one held my attention but it wasn't anything special. The whole story takes place within one day, Livia's 40th birthday party. Livia has been planning her 40th birthday party for decades and the tent is set up, the caterer is scheduled, and guests have been invited. But there is one guest who won't be coming-her daughter, who is in Hong Kong at university. Livia is okay with her daughter missing her party because she has a huge secret. A secret she doesn't want to share with her husband Adam, at least not yet. But Adam also has a secret. And then when he goes into town to pick up Livia's present, he finds out an even bigger secret. One that will eat him alive, but he doesn't want to share with Livia, doesn't want to ruin her party.
I mean, the book moved along relatively well. I listened to it as well, and the audiobook wasn't bad. I was interested in finding out this secret that Livia had, but when it happened, it was like, underwhelming. I mean the book wouldn't even have been a book if Adam and Livia would just have communicated.
You have to kind of suspend reality for it to work. I mean, who spends their entire life planning their 40th birthday party? It seems like of silly. But with that being said, I can kind of see both sides of the coin-see why both Adam and Livia decided to withhold information from their spouse. There's a decent amount of drama, but again, it's all quite underwhelming. I also felt basically no emotion about these characters. They never really became anything more than that to me.
I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway! Thank you to St. Martin's Press and Goodreads for the opportunity to review.

I was a huge fan of Behind Closed Doors and The Breakdown, so I was excited when I saw another BA Paris novel. I knew vaguely what it was about, but didn't really read too many reviews / the whole summary, so I was sort of surprised to find out it was more of a family drama than a thriller. It left me feeling pretty unsatisfied. I will say that the characters were very relatable and my alliance swayed between them and understanding both Livia's and Adam's motivations for keeping the secrets they did. I don't want to say much more about how I feel because I worry it will give the ending away, but just meh about this one.
