It was alright but it could’ve been better, the first book was good and was better off as a stand-alone.

What a read!! To me it was a bit slower than the first one since the majority our girl Fable was just angrily doing work on another person’s ship, BUT the ending had me hooked! I didn’t care so much for all the little games everyone was playing constantly though, how Fable got stuck in all of it. I would’ve loved seeing more of the Marigold crew!!
When Saint finally spoke out and said “my daughter” at the end my eyes welled with tears ((much as Fable’s eyes constantly did in the books) it legit happened so many times). Or when she figured out her Mom’s necklace had the midnight gemstone in it, I had lil goosebumps! Such an adventurous story, I absolutely love the way Young writes!

After unexpectedly loving Fable, I was obviously very excited to read the second book straight away. Spoiler alert: it’s another sequel that didn’t live up to the first book.
I can be very hard on duology. Most of the time they could have just been a strong standalone instead of a dragged story that result in a weak plot in book two. Fable could and should have been a standalone in my opinion.
In Fable, our main character joins the crew of the Marigold and unexpectantly find love and a family on its deck. An aspect of the story that I absolutely adored. In Namesake, Fable barely has any interaction with the crew of the Marigold and when she does, it’s so full of angst that we don’t feel the found family vibe anymore. That was already something that really bothered me.
Then there was the plot. I wish I could say it was a surprising one, but in truth, it was very predictable. Despite the high stakes, it felt like nothing could really endangers the characters. The fact that Fable was very passive in this book didn’t help either.
I still loved the setting and the atmosphere, like in the first book, was simply on point. The writing was also very good! In the end, the Fable duology was a quick enjoyable story, and despite its weaker ending, I still enjoyed it overall.

(Spoilers ahead) I liked the first book and was kind of let down by this one. I was really liking the world that was built but it was the characters and plot that fell flat.
My first issue is Fable pretty much does nothing. Like no choices she ever makes are significant because everything she does is undercut by Saint or West. Like they just make all of her choices meaningless because they both just bail her out of everything. It’s not that she is helpless but it feels that way in this book because she never is able to follow through on a choice. So it’s hard to like her. Additionally, like it feels like Fable was the last character made because the side characters (like saint and clove) have so much personality that she just is always reacting to things and never feels like an active part of the story.
Also Holland. Why is she a villain? Like just because she works against Saint? Because she isn’t any worse than he is TBH. Like i know worse things Saint has done. Okay she’s manipulative… is that not literally what every character has been to Fable? Is this not what the world of the narrows demands? Like i guess she’s a villain but i didn’t feel like anything was that high stakes because she wasn’t that bad and Saint probably would have just bailed them out if they got into any real trouble. Honestly, why even have a story about Fable when she barely did anything the whole story for the amount that they are mentioned should have been about Fables parents.
Additionally, i was just underwhelmed by the romance. Why did they like each other? Like West just fell for her during their business meetings before the start of the book and why is never really clear. I just really didn’t care and their putting their crew at risk because they have weird priorities was annoying when i just couldn’t buy their romance.
The resolution to the plot is literally just Saint walking in at the very end and solving it. Like the whole side quest for that stupid rock means nothing and is a complete waste of time. Because they never find it, no information or resources from it helps them in the future, and saint literally waltzes in during the resolution and solves the fucking plot. Why did i waste my time?
I’m disappointed because this series was highly regarded by so many and i was expecting so much more.

I liked the first book more. Namesake was decent but the end just made me mad
4/5 - Compared to the first, this was more plot driven.
Dear lord the amount of times I had to roll my eyes because of Fable's daddy issues. It was the most annoying thing ever in this book.
I had a lot of fun reading this series and I might read it again.
