More words that Emma Lysy can't pronounce in addition to "izzle-dee" (Isolde): boatswain, starboard

If you're going to narrate books about ships, maybe look up the lingo.

I liked Namesake—or at least, I didn’t dislike it. The plot and characters are interesting, but I struggled with the main protagonist. She just felt... dumb. Not in a way that made her endearing or complex, but in a way that made her decisions feel like they only existed to keep the plot moving.

Throughout the book, it seemed like every choice she made was just a setup for more obstacles rather than a reflection of real character growth. And then, when it came to the resolution, it wasn’t even her actions that saved the day—other characters stepped in to fix everything while she just sat there watching. That really took away from her impact as a protagonist.

There were definitely more compelling characters in the story, and when the side characters outshine the main one, that’s a problem. Because of that, I don’t feel invested enough to continue with the third book.

I definitely enjoyed the first book more than this one, not to say that this book was bad though. I just remember thinking that Fable was more entertaining and this book just didn't seem to have the same immediacy and intensity that benefited the other. The storyline was also quit linear, the plot twists easy to predict, so it wasn't the most engaging plot wise, for me at least. The characters didn't have the same chemistry that they did before, and I wish we had more time for the crew to interact with each other and form that camaraderie that we glimpsed at the end of Fable. Overall, not a bad book, but a bit disappointing when compared to the first and not the most memorable.

Fable’s journey could not have had a better ending.  Now ready to continue in the world of the narrows.

3.75 stars, rounded up to 4! (Loved this second installment in The World of the Narrows.) It didn't seem to pace quite as fast as Fable did but I still enjoyed digging into these characters deeper, exploring more of the seas and the ports, and putting some of the pieces of the puzzle together. Grabbing Saint next and excited to get the "backstory."

A sequel is always hard to follow up but Namesake had a lot going for it: my attachment to the characters fate, the beautiful descriptions of life on sea and dredging for jewels underwater.

Happy with how Fable’s story ended. Happy I read these stories!
