Tuning out of your own life to live vicariously in 19th century London. It was a great ride, I can see why Dickens considered this his opus.

I mean, it's Dickens. What's not to love?

I can say that when I first read this book as a teen, I skipped over large swaths of the descriptions, thinking it overly wordy (I do this with many books, I get impatient.) But now that I know that Dickens was paid by the word, and so embellished even the most simple of sentences, I'm getting an extra layer of enjoyment out of this story. SO much that's not necessary. It's hilarious.

I finished my #BigBookSummer with a bang this year, spending August immersed in David Copperfield and loving every minute of Dickens' clever, witty writing! Read my full review:

Read this as part of my English Literature studies in First form at secondary school. Loved every word.

დავიტანჯე.

Eleven hundred pages and not one superfluous word. No one, but no one, writes like Charles Dickens. I have laughed, I have cried, and undergone a vast number of other feelings besides. There aren't many books that exceed expectations, but Dickens' stories always do.

The audiobook is read by Richard Armitage, whose deep, yet soft voice is an unparalleled aural indulgence. In my 'umble' opinion he deserves a knighthood for the epic undertaking and the sheer brilliance of his performance. He doesn't just read the book - he acts it out, and does it so well that I have decided to abstain from watching any film or TV versions for a long time, as they are bound to disappoint after the experience I have just enjoyed.

Do yourself a favour and treat yourself to this - you will not regret it!
