Edward Snowden

4.31 AVERAGE

A well written, detailed account of Edward Snowden’s life; his childhood, his government career, and everything after 2013. I enjoyed it greatly, and it serves as a reminder of all that’s happened since he became a whistleblower more than six years ago.

While I agree with Snowden's premise, I don't agree with his conclusion. I think there's a possibility of a post-privacy society that's healthy. The true problem isn't that governments and/or corporations can find out incredible amounts of information about you and about what you do, it's that we live in and perpetuate a culture that chooses to prioritize punishment over support.

There's a post from EMTs that crosses my tumblr feed occasionally, begging people to just tell emergency personnel what drugs they took, because they want to treat the overdose, not tell the cops.

It's one of the reasons I disagree with Orwell's conclusion in 1984, and why I dislike The Knife of Never Letting Go so much. Forgiveness is possible. The guilt of betraying someone doesn't have to destroy you. If we all knew each other's secrets, the most likely response would be relief and forgiveness, not paranoia and isolation. Because we've all thought, said, and even done things that we knew were wrong. And the – not just the knowledge, but the full understanding – that others have done so as well – that can build empathy, and it can help each of us both acknowledge those failings and become better versions of ourselves.

This was a fascinating read!

United States government you dirty scheming bastard. Snowden goes into detail on his life, how he got interested in computers, and how he went to work for the government. I found the early stuff really interesting and the ending equally so. Unfortunately, that middle 1/4 of the book was extremely technical and kind of felt like an info dump especially for someone who is basically a computer novice; in regards to programming. I think Snowden speaks candidly about his life and the reasoning behind him going public with what he found out about the mass surveillance the government was doing. That part of the book is worth the read if you are even moderately interested. This is not for everyone though. 3/5
