I was looking forward to reading this book of short stories but I found them depressing. The style, with many run on sentences, was not appealing to me.

Reading this book is like touching a live wire. I truly think Jenny Zhang is one of the best writers alive today. Her prose is so electric, so surprising. She captures something about familial relationships and life itself that few authors manage to do. I love this book so so so so so so so so much.

I could not love this book more. Six years on and I still think about it all the time and still recommend it to everyone looking for a new book.

Super torn between 3 and 4 stars, may come back and change it later! This was great for book club discussion. The complex depictions of family dynamics from the perspective of elementary/middle school-aged girls were the best part. I've never read short stories that sort of blend in to each other this way before, it made for an interesting experience. Her skill as a poet definitely comes through in her writing and the times she chooses to have page long run on sentences with no periods actually felt powerful and intentional, not gimmicky.

I hated this so much that I'm raging against it. Yet another book that uses poverty porn and then taboo sexuality in the place of good writing. I am ANGRY at the fact that I read so much of this.

Takie 3.75. Skala 5 gwiazdek jest beznadziejna.
