I like the idea of this book, but it's just hard to get through. The writing just feels so stilted.

Loved the first half of the book that focuses on the experiences and ceremonies with Don Juan. However, I wasn't very keen on the second half of the book. It suddenly starts reading like a scientific paper and was tough to get through.

Amazingly interesting. Especially the first half with all the experiences of Carlos Castaneda and Don Juan from his point of view. This is not what I usually read and maybe that's why it took me only 3 days allthough I'm having my exams in a few days. I would totally recommend it. The second half was very dry and quite difficult to understand. I still didn't got everything and skimmed a few parts because I already understood the most of it from the first half.

first, I think it's hilarious that this guy earned his MA with these stories. perhaps it's a precedent thesis. after this, no more fiction please! I think it'd do well rebranded (and perhaps enjoyed more) as a psychological thriller in which a deeply lonely man is manipulated into letting himself be spiritually tortured by strangers for four years.
that being said, I didn't love don Juan. every time he spoke I thought, "just answer the question, okay? please don't play with me right now..." I'd like to (baselessly) theorize that Castaneda really did do all of those drugs and don Juan was the result of a bad trip.

love reading about psy plants.
This one covers a lot about peyote and datura. The way don juan described them , the procedure to plant and pluck them, the experiences when one takes them for the first time was jarring
