Emory is growing up, quickly approaching junior high and trying hard to find her place. Following the foot steps of her well loved older sister has been difficult, meanwhile her brother is well known for other reasons. When her and her brother are involved in a tragic accident in town it is revealed that Joeys addiction is worse than they thought. They try to support Joey and help him to get the care he needs, which is further complicated as he is not always a willing participant.

A heartbreaking story about growing up, complicated significantly with a family member struggling with addiction. It was a hard read at times, although important.  This book  acknowledges how difficult the road is for people who have addiction. Despite rehabilitation , it’s a monster that can rear its ugly head over and over and affects so many people. I felt strongly for so many characters in this book , although I struggled a little with the mother in this story at times seeing how hard she pushed her children was difficult.  I feel it is a story that will leave you feeling many emotions.

I don't usually write anything for these, but this book really hit home.

I come from a family where addiction has and always been a struggle. Every person I have know has been addicted to something at some point, and sometimes it gets better. Most of the time it does not. My parents were addicted to substances and alcohol. I had a brother who was addicted, an aunt who relapsed several times before overdosing and passing four years back.

This book touched on very real themes. Very real circumstances. The struggles presented by the user and the person looking in on the outside, the person watching another destroy themselves. I think, this is one of the best books I have read in a very long time.
