Yo this book is fascinating-- like a bunch of horror stories to tell around the fire. So many different perspectives!

A great collection of stories, all roughly between 20-30 pages, that are remarkably vibrant. As is common criticism for the book, the stories tend to suffer for want of clearer endings, but the writing is generally enough to make up for it. In particular, the stories "The Graveless Doll of Eric Mutis," "Reeling of the Empire," and "The Seagull Army Descends on Strong Beach, 1979" stand out as highlights.

Sadly, there were a only a couple stories that I enjoyed. The rest I wanted to skip over and forget about.

Interesting book of short stories. I think that the best story, by far, was Reeling for the Empire and my least favorite was Proving Up. I would be interested in reading more from this author.
challenging dark

This book is a collection of short stories with paranormal themes. The stories are interesting and well told. However, it feels a little like a creative writing exercise - the literary equivalent to throwing spaghetti on the wall to see what will stick. Some of the stories seem to cut off in the middle. I'm sure that's by design, to leave the reader to fill in the blanks, but I didn't care for it. The best story of the bunch is "New Veterans" which I enjoyed reading very much, but it still seemed to end without a true conclusion.

Her writing is very engaging, but the lack of resolution and/or likeable characters in most of these stories was disappointing. I did quite enjoy the horse presidents & the silk ladies.

some excellent concepts here, with a smattering of well written horror. “reeling for the empire” evoked physical unease in my body, and the hare betrayal in “graveless doll” inspired some actual anger on the mute’s behalf that even descriptions of beatings could not.

The New Veterans stood out to me but was a bit unsatisfying with a lack of real narrative payoff.
