I had a hard time deciding what to rate this book (I really wish we could give half stars because this would be 2.5). Russell writes beautifully and has some incredibly imaginative ideas, but most of the stories end too abruptly, as though she couldn't figure out how to end them.
an unsettling, but mesmerizing collection of short stories that are definitely unique.
This is weird and creepy and really cool. These stories keep me guessing!

Very entertaining and often effectively disturbing, this collection is so creative and unusual: vampires, veterans, bullies, human silkworm slaves, and regular folks in eerie circumstances abound.
The only story I actively disliked/gave up on was "Proving Up," and my many favorites more than compensated for that one.

I was disappointed by this interesting collection of short stories. This is the first book I have read by Ms. Russell and from previous reviews I just knew I would really like this book. The stories were thought provoking and well written. However, I could not get caught up in the tales. All of the stories were suprisingly different from each other and often collections have more in common than these stories did. I am still insterested in reading Swamplandia but now not as much.
