This was such a good collection of stories, from start to finish. What a ride. I feel like some of these stories are going to stick with me in some corner of my brain for a really long time. One thing I really admired was how haunting and unsettling some of these were to read, and to keep turning over. I just love short stories like that, that feel so much bigger than their page count. Definitely going to continue my Karen Russell kick after this one.

Read this after really enjoying Swamplandia! and St Lucy’s. I’ve seen some people say that the author’s voice feels more mature in these stories, and be that as it may, I found them to have lost some of their charm. This book was far more restrained than St Lucy’s, and unfortunately it didn’t hit as well for me.

Her prose is rich and beautiful, but her premises are dark and tormented. It's brilliant really.

This is the first book I have ever unintentionally re-read. I've vividly remembered the women-silk moths and the tattoo sun for years without recalling quite what book they came out of, and here they are! strange and delightful and full. i marvel at how these short stories have milled around my brain for years.

Particularly liked the vampires in the lemon grove.
