Strangely familiar is the phrase that kept coming to mind as I read these stories. Odd and emotionally resonant. Beautifully written and, on the whole, a great read.

Loved this collection. Karen Russell is a rockstar when writing about quirky and mythical things happening to characters.

While these stories are almost uniformly quirky and inventive in their premises, none rarely delivers much in the way of a surprising or interesting denouement.

Creepy, strange, and just enough of those perfect kind of not-satisfying endings where you want to shake the book and say, WELL? DID HE BLAHBLAH OR NOT?!?!

If st lucy's was beloved but swamplandia disappointed, don't worry! these short stories are excellent nuggets of weird that surpass her previous work.

3.5ish. While not every story in this collection was for me, I really loved the weirdness of them all and the strong voice and writing in each one. This collection definitely kept me on my toes.

this was SO weird. like so indescribably weird. but overall i really enjoyed it w the exception of one or two stories

Russell's writing style is gorgeous. All the stories in this collection are good, but "Reeling for the Empire" - about human silkworms - was by far the best. Creepy, beautiful, powerful.

Karen Russell has an amazing way of setting a scene and making you feel deep inside of a story in a only a few pages. However, at the end of every single story I felt empty because, there were, well, never really endings to any of the stories. For some, I can see the appeal - it's up to you to create the endings in your own head, and of course, many other will say that not all stories need to have endings. But in my own personal literary world, I need my short stories to have conclusions -- again, that's just me.
