The ideas behind the stories are great! And Karen writes beautifully, but it's like I'm watching the story from afar trough a telescope. It is amazingly detailed, but I lack the overall picture. The stories are just too distant to really move you.

good god this book sat unread on my shelf for years and now, finally having read it, i can confidently say that it will stay with me for many more years to come. an almost-perfect 4.5/5 ⭐️ and a shoo-in amongst my favorite short story collections of all time. the writing is gorgeous, the stories are poignant and evocative, and i really don’t have many more words to say than that.

Some of the stories were 5s, some I couldn't get into. Her mind is a funhouse which made the 5-star stories wondrous.

The spooky/unsettling tone she definitely had nailed down, but I felt really off-kilter by how abruptly some of the pieces ended. Maybe that was the point?
