Amazing read. If you are into true crime and a dark read, this is the book. Holes gives such a deep insight to his life as an investigator. Would definitely recommend this book!!

The book was good and I enjoyed learning more about Paul Holes, his life, and his work in law enforcement. It was a little more to do with his personal life than I expected it to be, in comparison - Chase Darkness with Me by Billy Jensen focuses a lot more on the crime aspect of Billy’s life. I’m not sure if it was me, but the descriptions of the crimes really made me uncomfortable.

It's not a bad book, but it is a sad and heavy book, which is a strange though somehow appropriate mix of an autobiography and unsolved or cold cases accounting but just an overview of mostly the trauma. Definitely not for the faint of heart or someone wanting a deep dive into an individual story.

A look into the capture and unmasking of The Golden State Killer and the unmasking of cold case investigator Paul Holes. This book details Paul's journey with anxiety, PTSD, and panic attacks in the aftermath of facing some of the worst crime scenes in history.

Cases are described respectfully and from Paul's perspective with facts sprinkled in. I thought it well done.

Still amazed I got to see him speak live last month at his book talk. He even signed my copy of this book!

A well-written story focused on the consequences of reality and of following a career you were designed to fulfill. 4.5 stars (rounded to 4)

This lost half a star for me because I struggled with the writing a bit. The memoir hit all the main points throughout Paul's life and his career but some sections felt rushed, confusing, and seemly popping out of nowhere. I had to read multiple paragraphs over to understand what was happening.

Overall, I recommend this to any true crime fanatics and those who have or are looking to have careers in criminal justice.

True Crime fans - Unmasked is a must-add to your TBR!
Author Paul Holes is a former criminalist with the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office who specialized in solving cold cases.
Thank you to Celadon Books for my gifted copy for review!
Unmasked: My Life Solving America's Cold Cases is Holes' documentation of his personal life and history, as well as the dark work on some of his most famous and frustrating cases.
Holes takes us through his investigation techniques, but also himself. An introvert by nature, diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder when the term was even less understood in the 80s, and prone to panic attacks, he made use of perceived weaknesses as strengths.
His ability to read people, situations and adapt to his surroundings brought professional successes, even when struggling with his personal life and relationships.
Among his many case files, the book is dotted with his obsessive investigation into the Golden State Killer (previously known as the East Area Rapist) - a case which remained unsolved for decades and was the subject of Michelle McNamara's famous book I'll Be Gone In The Dark. (It's not per se necessary to read her book before Unmasked, but I do definitely recommend.)
This book will undoubtedly be in my top reads of the year - fascinating throughout. Recommended.
 For release on April 26.
