All I’m saying is this book feels entirely slept on and it’s a crime. It was incredibly refreshing to not only read a stand alone but with a character working so hard to overcome their trauma and PTSD with patient and loving folks around him. I cannot begin to fathom how a book about a plague can also be so heartwarming. Absolutely best way to start this year of reading.

Probably a 3.5, but I enjoyed it enough to round up to a 4. I like the characters and the world that has been built. The main conflict ended a little anti-climatically but it was still a good story. My biggest complaint is that I felt like this book only gives a small taste of its potential. I’ll definitely pick up the next book if there ends up being one, though, hoping it’ll be even better now that the foundation is laid.
