Super interesting book. A nice mix of geography, history, culture, politics and more. I learned loads about the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and the Rhine region in general. Highly enjoyable read. Definitely recommend for travel lovers and history buffs alike.

Venturing from sea to summit, Coates traces the Rhine River through a variety of means: boats, biking, and even his prodigious aptitude for running.

I liked the book as a nice mix of personal experiences, descriptions of stops along the way, and research into topics such as Roman colonization, the German Wirtschaftswunder of the 1950s and 60s, and more contemporary looks into immigration, trade, and globalization.

I really enjoyed this book, and I'd recommend it to those planning to visit the Rhine, or for those, like me, who have visited the Rhine and ache for the chance to go back!
