My favorite book this year (so far). Could've done without the romance, but an excellent read. I think it's going to make a really interesting/unique movie. In 2018. Halfway done with my goal of 36 books, so I'm definitely going to make it. Based on this rate, I should've definitely made my goal 50 books (though I originally thought that was too much).

10/5 stars! This definitely makes it to my TOP 10 list and one of my favorite books of all times! It has just got everything I want in a book: innocence, adventure, RPG, easter egg, romance, struggles in life, wisdom, friendship, and of course, a HAPPY ENDING! When I read this book TWO years ago, I was already screaming at how amazing this book was. Now that I have seen the movie (which is a pretty good adaptation), I realize just how much better the book is. Of course, there are details in the movie I like and I think are improvements over the book, nonetheless, overall the book certainly wins. I guess what makes this a fantastic book is that it's simple and yet complicated all in one package.

It's simple because there is really one goal in this book: Find the EGG! Then it's complicated because EVERYBODY in the WHOLE DAMN WORLD wants the egg! Wade O. Watts a.k.a. WOW, a.k.a. Perzival is an immensely likable character. He is an almighty GEEK, who is flawed in so many ways but possesses a flawless memory and amazing gaming skills that make most players envy. I mean this weirdo plays a perfect game of Pacman! Imagine THAT! Prior to my severe back pain settling in, I used to explore dungeons and went on gaming marathons. It's ancient history now as I can barely sit through an hour of RPG without wheezing in pain. That's why this novel is so enjoyable, it brings back memories of the good old days when I could just immerse myself in a whole different world and leave the real world behind.

The cast is fun! I don't have to go into the sweet balance of a brilliant but slightly arrogant Wade, who's easily distracted by love (too easily). Then there is the genius Artemis (who kicks a$$) and shows the world gaming is not a male thing. Of course, we have the amazing H who is just as brilliant as the rest of the team. Daito & Shoto are awesome too!

Next is the geeky explanations! All the feels when I listen to Wade explaining all sorts of games (many in the 80s) and all the pop culture stuff in the 80s (when I was growing up). I also like how this story is not focused only on video games but also music, pop culture, movies, and so forth. I guess my only complaint about this book is it's too unrealistic. Come on, all the main characters are superhumans with superhuman abilities and memory skills. That's SOOO NOT FAIR! Might have been better if they are more normal humans (but then they wouldn't be able to beat the sixers).

Anyway, this is a REALLY GREAT BOOK and despite all that though, I'm not looking forward to a sequel even though Cline has mentioned there's one in progress. I think Ready Player ONE is PERFECT as a standalone. I would like to see Cline writing more books on MMORPG or similar stuff but DEFINITELY not a direct sequel.

P.S. Just when is the REAL OASIS out? When that finally arrives, I might have to go back to gaming, even if my back complains.
