In the 2010s, I attended an international summit on climate change as a layperson lottery winner, where a world-renown climatologist gave a presentation about scientific communication and climate change. He told us that when they presented their yearly findings to the UN, they always shared the most optimistic models. Today, he said, I will share with you our internal models. And we learned that if nothing were to change, if global climate policy were to remain moving at the snail's pace it was moving in the 2010s, we would only have until 2050 for our planet to sustain human life. By 2050, no significant number of humans would be alive anywhere to constitute a true society. Our oceans would be so warm as to precipitate a devastating die-off as well as extend the season for deadly weather activity to year-round danger of hurricanes/typhoons, droughts, crop and soil failure, and all but eliminate our access to the precious blue blood of horseshoe crabs from which we formulate so much of our medicine. So that fucked me up as you can imagine! Reading Weather was like discovering the blog of another layperson attendee of that lecture, and getting to read their blog's entries over the next few years of reeling from this news together.
The way Offill writes certainly is a bit addictive and a bit mesmerizing and very unique in style. That said sometimes also… a little hard to follow or put together in terms of plot. So I think I liked this one less than Dept. of Speculation but still found it enjoyable to read, it still intrigued me.

Least favorite book I read this week.
I've read another of her short novels and thought it was interesting.
This was less so.
So much whinging and political rants and never getting anywhere with her brother and just plain existential angst.
Next time I'll pass.

This is a very 21st century book. It easily be read in a day and if you enjoy the art of writing more as much as/more than a good story, you will enjoy this.
mostly fell flat for me. I enjoy books with little to no plot if it features compelling characters (or vice versa) but this one has neither. I liked some of the musings/observations in the book, but that’s pretty much all the book is. 2.5
