This might be a great book and I’m just not sophisticated enough to understand it. It’s definitely not *bad*; it’s just more like a series of haikus than a novel.

"I don't know what's wrong with me. I can't seem to stop making bad decisions. The weird thing is they don't sneak up on me. I can see them coming all the way down the pike."

Clever and thoughtful but never pretentious or hard to read. It's kind of a book about a doomer, but it's not a doomerist book. It feels very true-to-life and funny, even while being literary, though I'm sure some parts went over my head. At times it got a little too on the nose and heavy-handed, but it mostly did a great job of inching the reader towards their own conclusions, not spoon feeding.

I love the fragmented structure and the immediacy of the writing. Great read. Highly recommend this and all Jenny Offill’s work.

Listened to audiobook but loved it so much that I bought a physical copy. I loved the immediacy of the present tense narration and thought the fear and anxieties of the mid 2010s was captured so well through that.
