I just love her writing style. I wanted the themes to be stronger in this one but overall very enjoyable and thought provoking.
Rounding up. I was hoping for "beautifully spare" but it was more "frustratingly short." Nice writing but left me wanting too much more.
The. Bomb. I'm sure this isn't for everyone but is was 100% for me. Offill writes like she's using an X-acto knife rather than a word processor. There are so many precise observations rendered so sparely, yet so exactly.
It's kind of a dark book. Set around (before and after) the Trump election, although I don't believe his name ever appears. There's climate change stress, failure to meet your potential stress, breakdown of society stress, marriage stress, parenting stress—the narrator is doing her best bumping around in the challenge of living while things fall apart. The feeling was so acute I kept wondering why there was no mention of masks, the other historical panic inducer of the 21st century.
But it's not written darkly. It's written like you, or me, but smarter and funnier.
If you're looking for a big juicy novel with fully realized characters and a richly drawn world with an exciting plot—this ain't it. But if you want something incredibly readable, funny, angsty, so smart, incisive in a way that you can almost feel the scalpel, but in a good way, even a breathtaking way, this is worth your time.

Maybe this is easier to read than listen to as an audiobook. It basically turned into white noise because it didn’t feel like there was a plot to follow so it became far too easy to lose track of listening.
I enjoyed this book just fine, but I felt like it was trying too hard. I can tell already that it won't be a memorable read for me a month down the line.
The premise was good enough but I think the character was a bit boring. That's ok though, to write a boring character.

I love that the author can convey so much with such spare prose.
